How to Check a Car's Mileage
MOT records can provide a useful trail of recorded mileage over time. They can help you spot patterns that deserve a closer look.
1. Compare each recorded reading
Start by looking at the mileage recorded at successive MOT tests. A useful history normally lets you see how the number changes over time.
2. Watch for unexpected drops
A mileage reading that is lower than a previous recorded reading deserves investigation. It does not by itself prove fraud, because recording and vehicle history can be more complicated.
3. Check the dates as well as the numbers
Mileage makes more sense when you consider the time between tests. A small change over a short period and a small change over several years tell different stories.
4. Do not rely on mileage alone
Mileage is only one part of a used-car assessment. Combine MOT records with service history, invoices, physical condition and other vehicle checks.
