What Does an MOT Advisory Mean?
An MOT advisory is a tester's note about a defect or condition that did not cause the vehicle to fail that particular test.
1. An advisory is not the same as a failure
A vehicle can pass its MOT while still having advisories. The item may not yet be severe enough to fail the test, but it can still need attention.
2. Look for repeated advisories
One advisory is not automatically a problem. If the same type of issue appears across several MOTs, it is worth asking whether it has actually been repaired.
3. Consider the vehicle's age and mileage
Wear-related advisories can be more understandable on an older or higher-mileage vehicle. Context matters when you read the history.
4. Use the history as one part of your decision
MOT records are useful evidence, but they are not a full mechanical inspection. For an important purchase, combine the history with a physical inspection and other checks.
